Foreword by Magda Gere Lewis
"Feminist Teaching in Theory and Practice does a wonderful job of reminding us that there is no more critical issue in curriculum today than thinking through our theories of teaching. This brave book . . . takes us within the critical struggle against resident theories of teaching that have held the norms of practice in their throes for so long. It speaks to how dedicated educators are working hard and by their best lights to reform the theories about gender and power."
From the Series Editors Foreword by John Willinsky
"A unique and welcome opportunity for anyoneteachers and students, feminist or notinterested in the question of what dynamics contribute to the possibilities of teaching for social responsibility. . . . Through a systematic application of theory to practice, Becky Ropers-Huilman has presented rich and textured documentation of the politics of education and schooling from a feminist poststructuralist perspective. . . . This work provides an insider look at the question, What is feminist about feminist teaching?"
From the Foreword
Through the use of qualitative methods and poststructuralist feminist approaches, this volume addresses the multiple factors and perspectives that contribute to the many forms of feminist teaching. Incorporating a wide range of views based on conversations and observations with 22 teachers, the author encourages readers to broaden their understanding of feminist teaching while also providing suggestions for practice. With a focus on circumventing existing structures to create new possibilities for the classroom, the text examines power relations, knowledge negotiations, approaches to difference, and language usage through speech and silence.
