"Education and Emancipation is clear and lucid, conveying ideas and perspectives that will be valuable for both prospective teachers and faculty. By combining "universalist perspectives" with "particularist perspectives," Fletcher generates a theoretical perspective that can help move schools further toward emancipatory educational policies and practices. The author provides suggestive commentary that can enhance the quality of classroom life as educators work toward a more just and caring society."

Landon Beyer, Professor and Associate Dean for Teacher Education, Indiana University

"Gives us a fascinating, richly informative guided tour across the perplexing skies of current theoretical controversies over schooling in this country. . . . Through astute analysis, constructive critique, and creative realignments, Fletcher maps out a new vision of complementarity among four contemporary theories."

–From the foreword by Ann Diller

This important work reconceptualizes the landscape of contemporary educational theory. Based on a careful and philosophically informed assessment of liberalism, critical theory, postmodernism, and care-theory, it provides an innovative framework for understanding and guiding school practice. With wisdom and insight, Fletcher focuses on the tensions and conflicts that have divided emancipatory theories and offers a compelling alternative to the fractiousness that divides proponents of emancipatory views. Intended to meet the needs of all students, these proposals stand in opposition to the agenda set by neo-conservatives.

Scott Fletcher is Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at the University of New Hampshire. He is an experienced teacher and has participated in local and national school reform efforts, including co-founding and co-directing a regional center for the Coalition of Essential Schools and working with the Annenberg Institute for School Reform.
