"This videotape is a wonderful companion to Young Children Reinvent Arithmetic, Second Edition, for use with preservice and in-service elementary school teachers, and elementary mathematics staff developers. It is a great addition to the professional library of mathematics teacher educators."
Frances Curcio, New York University
In this highly useful video, Constance Kamii and Faye Clark show constructivist teaching in action. Using an approach based on Piaget’s theory, Leslie Baker Houseman encourages her first-grade students to think critically about mathematics. The results are compelling. We see a room of students who have faith in their own deliberative skills. We are privy to a teacher who does not correct students, but instead encourages them to question answers and subsequently express their viewpoints. Finally, we observe children who have a genuine understanding of mathematics rather than a superficial, perfunctory one.
This video is a helpful instrument for teachers who believe in and want to learn more about constructivism in mathematics education.
